A Different Energy

A Different Energy stands as a testament to the enduring wisdom and strength of Caribbean women. It sounds a call for a more diverse, inclusive and equitable development of one of the world’s most male-dominated domains: the oil and gas industry.
Over the last decade, as global energy has become hyper-focused on the Southern Caribbean, the role and opinions of local women have too often been overlooked. In this compelling, first-of-its-kind book, award-winning lawyer-turned-writer Celeste Mohammed remedies that omission.
In powerful, eye-opening portraits of eight Trini, Surinamese and Guyanese women who are employed in the Caribbean oil and gas industry, Mohammed uses a range of styles to keep the gender conversation refreshingly candid, often humorous, and always thought-provoking.
With a voice both earnest and confiding, intellectual and intimate, this book’s commentary and analysis extract from the women’s stories lessons for any woman seeking to defy odds, shatter stereotypes, and forge paths in a business culture which underestimates her.

Celeste Mohammed is a Trinidadian lawyer-turned-writer and the author of “Pleasantview”(Ig, Jacaranda, 2021; Ouida, 2022) which won the 2022 OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature, the 2022 CLMP Firecracker Award for Fiction, and was a finalist for the UK Society of Authors McKitterick Prize for Fiction.
Celeste holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Lesley University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Her short stories have won numerous awards including a 2018 PEN/Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize.
A Different Energy is Celeste’s Non-Fiction debut.

From Tomato Boy to Business Magnate

A fascinating account of the life of a successful businessman and his family that has been 20 years in the making! "From Tomato Boy to Business Magnate" keeps what the title promises and charts, with lavish illustrations, the life both private and public of "Bally" (Mr. Balliram Maharaj, CMG) and his wife "Lilsy".

Having provided proofreading, editing, design and layout for the book, we got intimately acquainted with the manuscript that was written by Shamshu Deen, HBM, and edited by Dr. Iezora Edwards (who patiently guided us through the myriad of changes and corrections!)

What we liked about this particular memoir was the hands-on business and life advice that Bally liberally shares: from what to do if you are kidnapped, to how to supervise cashiers, to how to deal with wire transfers and insurance contracts. In between the reader enters the magical world of a man who somehow manages to be superbly successful at his business ventures and yet finds time to get involved in steelband, the creation of a hospital, tennis and cricket, finding his ancestral village in India, local politics, the First People in Arima, playing mas—spanning all religions and cultures of Trinidad and Tobago. In short, this Tomato Boy is truly a Trini!

Easy to read, lavishly illustrated, with so many different topics being discussed and explored, this book has something of interest for everybody. And it's fun as well since it feels so personal, so rich as a legacy of an 80-year old man who has done ever so much in his life.

Softcover copies of the book are available for purchase at @admimportexport in Arima.

Heady Days by Patrick Johnstone

"Heady Days - A Memoir of a 70s AdMan in T&T" is a memoir of advertising executive Patrick Johnstone of his career in advertising in Trinidad and Tobago, from his teenage years to the creation of Publicis Caribbean Limited.

Johnstone's account of the advertising agency scene in the late 1960s to early 2000s is told with deep insight and a lot of irreverent accounts of the people and situations that he encountered in his profession.
Not sparing tongue-in-cheek commentary and peppered with local aphorisms and typical "Trini" idiom, this entertaining book is geared to amuse and inform not only the "Mad Men" of his generation, but people generally in touch with the Caribbean and its idiosyncrasies.
Award-winning Adman Patrick Johnstone has worked with leading Caribbean and international companies on almost every category of advertising account imaginable, mastering all facets of the branding and creative process as an exceptional all-rounder.
After entering Trinidad's fast-evolving advertising world in 1970 at a small agency, he went on to take the industry by storm with his out-of-the-box style, eventually founding his own agency, Publicis Caribbean Limited, as part of the Publicis Worldwide Agency Network, thirty years later in 2000.
Patrick graduated in General Arts from Centennial College Toronto, Canada, and holds a diploma in Audio Engineering from The Full Sail Recording Institute, Florida. He is a practicing and successful fine artist, and the recipient of numerous advertising awards and accolades for advertising music.
He is the proud father of two daughters, Lisa and Jada and son Scott, and grandfather to two, Amelia and Nicolas.

The Triumph of the People of Modest Means through the Volunteer Spirit

70 Years of TECU Credit Union Co-operative Society Limited in Trinidad and Tobago
Researched and written by Mary Shand and Alice Besson

This account of TECU Credit Union, founded in 1946, chronicles the institution’s first seven decades in Trinidad and Tobago.
Born out of the necessities of a post-war, colonial society in which access to credit was limited to few,  TECU’s membership grew and prospered over the years to shape the outstanding success that their credit union is today. As times became ever more modern, political and economic realities changed, and technology revolutionised society over the last decades, TECU grew from strength to strength, adhering firmly to the co-operative principle.
Many principled and upstanding men and women guided TECU over the years. They unselfishly and with great tenacity gave of their time and expertise on a voluntary basis, and worked as employees unstintingly for the credit union’s members. This book lets you meet some of them, and records their wonderful contributions over the years.
TECU today is one of the most celebrated and financially successful credit unions in the Caribbean. Nevertheless,  it has not lost sight of its reason for being: to stand tall as a symbol of The Triumph of People of Modest Means.

A Will and a Way

Anthony N. Sabga’s autobiography is a commemoration of the lives and adventures of those bold and enterprising men and women who braved the dangers of the ocean, the hostilities of a new environment and the privations of a residence on a distant coast to procure a better way of life for themselves and their families.

In tracing the history of Tony’s life, we trace the history of the growth of a community and a people who amidst difficult circumstances were able to achieve a large measure of success and recognition for themselves.
Researched and written by Prof. Bridget Brereton and Dr. Raymond Ramcharitar, this book is fully illustrated with images from the archives of both the Sabga family and the many companies that Tony Sabga leads.

Paria Publishing is particularly pleased to have been asked to undertake the book design and production because of our long-standing association with the ANSA McAL Group. In 2007, we researched, wrote and produced their company history, “125 Years of Business in the Caribbean”.

The Helpful Bank

The History of RBTT in the Caribbean 1902–2007
by Alice Besson
Edited by Helen Drayton

The story of this book spans more than fifteen decades: from 1856, when the Merchants Bank of Halifax was established in Nova Scotia; to 1902, when the Union Bank of Halifax opened its branch office in Port-of-Spain; to 1910, when Royal Bank of Canada, successor of the Merchants Bank of Halifax acquired the Union Bank and thus began its establishment in Trinidad and Tobago; to 1972, when The Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago was established as a local bank and to 2007, when RBTT completed 35 years of unparalleled success as a leading indigenous financial services group in the Caribbean Region.

Its purpose is to place on record the strategic corporate insights, decisions and major social, economic and political events that shaped its destiny and also, to share with present and future generations its eventful and successful journey as a major player that contributed immensely to shaping the banking and financial services landscape in Trinidad and Tobago in particular, and the rest of the Caribbean.
