Tales of the Paria Main Road by Gerard Besson

For Paria Publishing’s 35th anniversary and in honour of GĂ©rard A. Besson being awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of the West Indies, we are presenting a limited second edition of his first published work, Tales of the Paria Main Road.

First published in 1973, this whimsical book began Besson’s journey into publishing, which led to the formation of Paria Publishing Company Limited.
Tales of the Paria Main Road is comprised of three short stories loosely based on the mis-adventures of Jerry and his friends as young men in Trinidad during the 1960/70’s. It touches on the folklore of Trinidad and Tobago’s Afro-French culture and introduces the reader to some of the characters who still inhabit to this day the forest of the Paria Main Road.
Not all is folklore and tall tales, however. At the time, Trinidad, like much of the world, was changing and this was ever present in the growing social awareness of the “Black Power Movement” which played a big part of our nation’s growth, as seen through Besson’s eyes.

Symmetries of Word Being Made Flesh

“Symmetries” is a precious little gem was produced in both a hardcover and reinforced softcover version.

Author LeRoy Clarke wanted to achieve a whimsical, gift-like feel for this small book, which features in essence five poems excerpted from “Parables of our Joyless Days”, illustrated with particular drawings from his archives. Lovingly designed and produced, “Symmetries” became exactly what the author had in mind: an appealing, slim volume that fits in one’s palm!

PARables of our Joyless Days

Trinidad painter-cum-poet LeRoy Clarke wrote this masterpiece as an “Epitaph for a Citizen” – this citizen being, in fact, he himself!

Dedicated to his numerous mentors, he explores the changes that have happened in his world and his country, his space, over his lifetime, with particular reference to the recent past. The book is illustrated with drawings from his archives and from his new series “Hayti”. The cover features a gold foiling of title and picture frame, which gives the book a sumptuous feel.

Eye Hayti...Cries...Everywhere...

In 2015, Paria Publishing continued the long-standing collaboration with Master Artist LeRoy Clarke and produced an exhibition catalogue, portfolio of cards and portfolio of prints to accompany his exhibition “Eye Hayti … Cries … Everywhere …”

The Eye Hayti series comprised 110 black and white acrylic drawings, varying in sizes from 8×12 inches to 10×6 feet. In this book, we combined the pieces with colourful backgrounds inspired by the custom-made frames that the works were framed in.

Paria Publishing’s Alice Besson was invited by the artist to contribute an essay to the book, which otherwise features excellent commentary by Caribbean intellectuals including the artist himself.

The book is published by and available at the National Museum & Art Gallery of Trinidad and Tobago.

A World of Art

In 2014, the House of Angostura in Trinidad and Tobago celebrated its 190th anniversary

To mark the occasion, the Company assembled some of its extensive collection of works by local painters and featured them in this coffee table book.
In it, the viewer will find a selection of the canvasses that usually decorate the rooms of Angostura’s offices and hallways. It is an eclectic mix of artists who have achieved world fame over a lifetime, side by side with young painters who are showing great talent and promise.
What they share in common is a Caribbean identity, and in this, they reflect very much what Angostura stands for. Like these paintings and their creators, Angostura reflects a slice of life of these isles, and forms part of the very fabric of Trinidad and Tobago. This book stands for what the company strives daily to achieve: to create fine rums and bitters which are A Work of Art.

What Things Are True by Jackie Hinkson

A Memoir of Becoming an Artist

What things are true? This is what Jackie Hinkson has been asking himself since his early introduction into art and, more so, since completing his studies at the University of Alberta whose motto is “Quaecumque Vera” (Whatsoever Things Are True). In 2012, the year of his 70th birthday, he is still searching for the answer in his work.
In this memoir, Hinkson tells of the experiences that helped to shape his vision as an artist; his early family and community life in “Cobo Town” in the heart of Port-of-Spain; his  introduction to painting while a student at QRC and his crucial friendship with Peter Minshall there; the influence of the Central Library and the Art Society on his early formation; his doubts and his single-mindedness while furthering his studies in Paris and Canada; his marriage and the birth of his first child; his return to Trinidad in 1970 where he immediately faced challenges as an artist in a rapidly changing society, and his critical decision to live the rest of his life as an artist working in and inspired by his native land.

Donald ‘Jackie’ Hinkson was born on the 13th of September 1942, in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. Hinkson began painting in his teens and for over fifty years has remained uncompromising in the pursuit of his calling and prolific in his output.

After studying in Paris and Canada, and by then married, he resolved to live and work in Trinidad and Tobago. At first he  focused on plein-air watercolour and drawing, travelling and exhibiting throughout the Caribbean. In 1982 the Government of Trinidad and Tobago commissioned him to produce 100 drawings and watercolours of the country’s disappearing architecture.
From the 1990s, without abandoning watercolour, Hinkson resumed working in oils and also began producing figurative wood sculptures.
Perhaps Hinkson’s most recognised body of work is his series of very large oils in which he has depicted events from the life of Christ in a contemporary Trinidadian context. This series has been documented in a book, a DVD and a portfolio of prints entitled “And So We Continue”. His other book, “Drawing for Days”, covers forty years of his drawings.
Hinkson has also produced a number of murals and large charcoals that reflect a growing sense of social observation.
In 2010, Hinkson’s numerous sketch pads were inscribed in UNESCO’s “Memory of the World” registry and in 2011, an Honourary Doctorate was conferred on him by the University of the West Indies.
Hinkson and his wife Caryl have three children and nine grandchildren. They live in Trinidad and Tobago, where he continues to work.
