From Tomato Boy to Business Magnate

A fascinating account of the life of a successful businessman and his family that has been 20 years in the making! "From Tomato Boy to Business Magnate" keeps what the title promises and charts, with lavish illustrations, the life both private and public of "Bally" (Mr. Balliram Maharaj, CMG) and his wife "Lilsy".

Having provided proofreading, editing, design and layout for the book, we got intimately acquainted with the manuscript that was written by Shamshu Deen, HBM, and edited by Dr. Iezora Edwards (who patiently guided us through the myriad of changes and corrections!)

What we liked about this particular memoir was the hands-on business and life advice that Bally liberally shares: from what to do if you are kidnapped, to how to supervise cashiers, to how to deal with wire transfers and insurance contracts. In between the reader enters the magical world of a man who somehow manages to be superbly successful at his business ventures and yet finds time to get involved in steelband, the creation of a hospital, tennis and cricket, finding his ancestral village in India, local politics, the First People in Arima, playing mas—spanning all religions and cultures of Trinidad and Tobago. In short, this Tomato Boy is truly a Trini!

Easy to read, lavishly illustrated, with so many different topics being discussed and explored, this book has something of interest for everybody. And it's fun as well since it feels so personal, so rich as a legacy of an 80-year old man who has done ever so much in his life.
